Henry Winstanley
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Henry Winstanley (1644–November 27, 1703) was an English engineer.
He began his career as an engraver but branched out into other enterprises. Later he owned a small fleet of boats, and lost two on the Eddystone Rocks. He decided to erect a lighthouse there, completing it in 1698. It was built of timber, and had not much strength; he perished in it along with five others in the Great Storm of 1703.
