Heterotopia can refer to:

  • In a 1967 lecture, called in English either "Different spaces" or Of Other Spaces (reprinted in the Aesthetics, Method, and Epistemology collection), Michel Foucault coins a novel concept of the heterotopia. See also [1] Foucault's essay Of other spaces.
  • In medicine, "heterotopia" refers to the displacement of an organ or part of an organ from its normal position.
  • Trouble on Triton (1976) is a science fiction novel by Samuel R. Delany. It is subtitled An Ambiguous Heterotopia, implying that it is not strictly utopian (though it is certainly not dystopian, as the society presented is clearly intended to be viewed positively). The subtitle implies simply a "different place" or "other place", and the novel offers several conflicting perspectives on the concept of utopia. Of course, Delany was familiar with the writings of the French philosopher Michel Foucault, and it is thought that Delany's use derives from the use Foucault put the term to.
