  • The term highland is used in geography for any elevated mountainous plateau.
  • The Highland Council Area is also an administrative area in Scotland that is part of, but not the same as, the generally mountainous area called the Scottish Highlands.
  • The Highland Region is a defunct local government area of Scotland covering the same area as the Highland Council (but with fewer powers) and was absorbed by that Council in 1996.
  • Highland may refer to areas of New Guinea that are ecologically and ethnologically distinct from the lowland or coastal areas.
