Hoffman Estates is a northwestern suburb of Chicago, Illinois. The village is located primarily in Cook County with a small section in Kane County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the village population was 49,495 and estimated to be 52,046 in 2005. The village was incorporated in 1959 [1].

In 1954, a local farmer sold his 160-acre farm to Sam and Jack Hoffman, owners of the Father and Son Construction Company, for a subdivision in Cook County. The land, now known as Parcel A, was located east of Roselle Road between Golf and Higgins Roads. The first homeowners began to move into the new subdivision in late 1955. The homes were built on half-acre lots. On September 19, 1959, residents voted to incorporate as the Village of Hoffman Estates. The charter was issued on September 23, 1959. The population at the time was about 8,000, and the incorporated area was just under three square miles.

The village now serves as the headquarters location for the Sears Holdings Corporation. Beginning in 2006, it will be home to the Chicago Hounds of the United Hockey League and the Chicago Storm of the Major Indoor Soccer League. The following spring, it will also be home to the Chicago Shamrox of the National Lacrosse League and a United Indoor Football team.
