• Holocaust, from Greek holo-kauston "all burnt", in its original sense refers to a completely-burnt sacrifice, see Holocaust (sacrifice).
• By extention the word was used in English to refer to other acts of obliteration by burning. The specific sense of "massacre, destruction of a large number of persons" is attested from 1833, usually in a context in which victims are burnt to death or their bodies destroyed. It was in this sense that the term "nuclear holocaust" came to be used after World War II, to refer to the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the anticipated result of a nuclear war and nuclear winter.
• The Holocaust, the systematic killing of mainly Jews, but also Gypsies, Poles, and other groups in Europe during World War II that killed 11,000,000 people in all, known in Hebrew as Shoah. Since the 1970s, this has been the main meaning of the English term. See also Names of the Holocaust.
• Post-1970s coinings of "holocausts" in the sense of "genocide" or "mass murder" imply a comparison to the Shoah and are often used polemically

  • Hindu Holocaust, the Hindu genocide in India at the hands of invading Islamic Armies from the West.
  • Chinese Holocaust, in China during the Japanese occupation.
  • Native American Holocaust, or Native American massacres
  • Prussian Holocaust, infrequently used term for sacking of Leuven during WWI and WWII evacuation of Germans from East Prussia.
  • Serbian Holocaust, or Serbian Genocide that killed upwards of 850,000 Serbs by Croatian and Muslim Nazis during WWII.
  • Ukrainian Holocaust, the Holodomor during Soviet collectivisation.
  • Rwanda Holocaust, or Rwandan Genocide (1994) that killed 1,000,000 people..
  • Holocaust of the un-born (abortion), is a term used in combination with pro-life activism argument.

• "Holocaust on your Plate" was the name of a controversial exhibition by PETA.
• "Holocaust!" is the name of a book about the Cocoanut Grove fire, which killed 492 people in Boston in November, 1942. The book was published in 1959, and the word "holocaust" is used in its earlier meaning.
