Hornblower

Hornblower is the umbrella title of an acclaimed series of television drama programmes loosely based on C. S. Forester's novels about the character Horatio Hornblower, a British naval officer during the Napoleonic Wars.

The series stars Ioan Gruffudd in the title role and is produced by the British broadcaster Meridian Television, and shown on ITV1 (and as of September 2006 is being shown on ITV3) in the UK and A&E Television Networks in the U.S.

Other regular cast members include Robert Lindsay (as Hornblower's superior Captain Edward Pellew), Paul Copley, Jamie Bamber and Paul McGann. Other well-known actors have appeared in guest roles, including David Warner, Anthony Sher, Philip Glenister, Andrew Tiernan, Samuel West, Cherie Lunghi and Ronald Pickup.

The series currently consists of eight made-for-television movies, which are notable for their high production values. All were later released on DVD. In the U.S. the series was retitled Horatio Hornblower, and some of the episodes were known by different titles.

Ioan Gruffudd has been quoted [1] as saying that he would be glad to participate in more Hornblower films, however, there are currently no plans for future episodes.
