Hounds have been used since prehistory. This statue shows the goddess Diana hunting with a hound.

A hound is a type of dog that assists hunters by tracking or chasing the animal being hunted. Compare with gun dogs, which assist hunters by identifying the location of prey or retrieving it rather than by chasing it.

There are three types of hound, with several breeds belonging to each type:

TypeExample
Sighthounds, which follow prey by keeping it in sight. This type of dog is very fast and will catch and kill or immobilize the game themselves.
Whippet
Scent hounds, which follow prey by tracking its scent. This type of dog have endurance, but are not fast runners.
Basset Hound
Aboriginal hounds, which follow prey by equally using sight, scent, and hearing. This type of dog is fast and has endurance, but it is not as fast as sighthounds.Kritikos Lagonikos
