Nickelodeon's animated television series, SpongeBob SquarePants has gained an international following. Although SpongeBob SquarePants originated in the United States, it is also shown in Canada, Middle East, South America, Latin America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa.

  • In the Indonesian version, SpongeBob is sounded "Sponsbob Squarepants", because "Sponge" if pronounced in Indonesian dialect will sounds "Sepong". Sepong in Indonesian means oral sex, and is therefore inappropriate for children. Spons is Indonesian translation for "Sponge".

  • In the Hebrew version of the show, SpongeBob's name is בובספוג מכנסמרובע (Bobsfog Michnasmerooba) which means the same, however in order to keep with the opening tune's melody it is called (only in the song) בובספוג המרובע (Bobsfog HaMerooba) which means "spongebob the square"
  • In the Danish, Norwegian and Swedish versions of the show, SpongeBob's name is SvampeBob Firkant or SvampBob Fyrkant, which means "SpongeBob Square".
  • In the Latin American and Spanish versions of the show, SpongeBob's name is "Bob Esponja" (pronounced Bob Espon-haa), which is a literal translation of the English name. It should be noted, however, that in this case "Esponja" is the character's last name, while the "SquarePants" portion of the original English name is dropped altogether (except in Brazil, where his surname is "Calça-quadrada", also a literal translation of the English surname).
