The Iowa Stars were founded by Howard Baldwin, of Hockey Holdings & Management Group, and Dallas businessman Bob Schlegel and began play in the 2005-06 AHL season. They have a five year affiliation agreement with the Dallas Stars and a one year agreement with the Edmonton Oilers.
Though for the 2006-07 AHL Season Dallas is expected to be the lone supplier of talent.
- The franchise was previously known as: Louisville Panthers (1999-2001).
This franchise is not related to the former Iowa Stars, who played in Waterloo, Iowa in 1969-70 as a member of the old Central Hockey League.
