James Erisey was born at Erisey House near Mullion, in the parish of Grade in Cornwall. He was a famous British Naval man who sailed with Drake. Like Drake, the Spanish considered him an outlaw pirate, but to England he was simply a sailor and privateer.

In 1585 Drake hired James Erisey to captain a man-o-war when, following message from the Queen Elizabeth I, that "privateers were at liberty to attack Spanish shipping".

In 1586 he was part of a fleet led by Sir Francis Drake, he was also one of the early colonists of Roanoke Island. He was Captain of the "White Lion" , a private man-of-war owned by Charles Lord Howard of Effingham who at the time was Lord Admiral of England.

In 1588 was at Plymouth with Drake again when they sailed out to attack the Spanish fleet during the Armada. Also in this fleet was Sir Richard Grenville who was a cousin to Erisey.
