James Tytler
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
James Tytler (Balloon Tytler) (1745 - January 11, 1804) was a Scottish aviator (aeronaut), eccentric, and editor. He was the editor of the second edition of Encyclopædia Britannica between 1776 and 1784. He was the first Briton to fly a hot air balloon, making a flight over Edinburgh in 1784. Vincenzo Lunardi -- the Daredevil Aeronaut -- stole Tytler's thunder with five sensational Scottish launches that created a ballooning fad and ladies' fashion for skirts and hats. The Lunardi bonnet was even mentioned in the poem 'To a Louse'by Robert Burns! Tytler trained as a surgeon and initially worked as a pharmacist. He spent his final years in North America.
