Captain John Merriam is an United States military officer and lawyer.[1] After returning from a year-long deployment to Iraq as a military prosecutor, he was appointed to defend Omar Khadr before the Guantanamo military commission.

Khadr's civilian lawyer, Muneer Ahmad, criticized Merriam's appointment, on the grounds of his inexperience, a criticism which Merriam agreed with. After a long legal struggle, Lieutenant Colonel Colby Vokey was appointed as lead counsel representing Khadr. Merriam continues to serve as a member of the defense team.

In June 2006, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the military commissions as violating international law. The commissions cases, including that of Omar Khadr, are expected to resume in 2007.
