[edit] Interesting Information

In 2000, Kankakee County [not just the city of Kankakee] was rated the worst community to live (out of 354 rated communities) in the United States from a book that's published every four years, Cities Ranked and Rated, by Bert Sperling and Peter Sander. This was parodied by late night host David Letterman, who gave the city two identical gazebos, hoping the town could turn itself around as the "Home Of The Twin Gazebos". Since this time, city leaders have attempted to improve on this ranking by bringing in a waterpark, ice rink, revitalizing downtown, and other community improvement projects. It was recently announced that the Kankakee area will be home to an ethanol plant of a Kansas City-based business.

Retired Major League Baseball pitcher Terry Wells was born in Kankakee.

Frank Lloyd Wright designed two houses in the Riverview section of the city. They still stand today.

Kankakee has produced 3 Illinois Governors (Len Small, Samuel H. Shapiro, and George Ryan).

Although Kankakee folklore claims that first Dairy Queen was opened in Kankakee, the first Dairy Queen was actually opened in Joliet, Illinois. <ref> Dairy Queen FAQs</ref> Sherb Noble, the man who opened the first Dairy Queen, opened his first ice cream shop in Kankakee named "Sherb's" where the Dairy Queen product was first tested. Essentially this makes Kankakee the true home of Dairy Queen ice cream, but not the franchise name itself. <ref>Kankakee County visitor's info</ref>

Kankakee is referred to in a number of popular songs, including City of New Orleans and Lydia the Tattooed Lady.

Kankakee is also home to the Kankakee Nursery known for its world famous variety of trees. Run by the Worth family, the nursery is said to be one of the best in the Midwest. Some of the trees will actually be used in decorating the area for Beijing Olympics in 2008.
