[edit] History
LTU was established in May 1955 as Lufttransport Union and started operations on October 20, 1955, in Frankfurt. It adopted its present name in 1956 and has been based in Dusseldorf since 1961.
LTU runs very popular USA routes from its Dusseldorf hub and directly competes on some of them with Lufthansa, Germany's flag carrier. LTU did run well frequented services from Dusseldorf to Beijing, Chengdu, and Shanghai, but they were dropped. [citation needed]
The airline offers flights worldwide and is majority owned by dba (60%). Hans-Rudolf Woehrl, the owner of dba, is currently planning to link the operations of LTU and dba, with dba flying inside Germany and LTU serving international destinations. In the meantime, Woehrl has decided to reduce his share in the company and is selling in excess of 20% of his holding to Juergen Marbach, the long-time CEO of LTU International. The main problem is that LTU International has been running at a sizeable loss for several years now, funded by REWE in Cologne, and there is no indication this will change in the near future. [citation needed]
LTU ist the fifth safest airline worldwide.[citation needed]
