Lagophthalmos

Lagophthalmos is an inability to close the eyelids completely.<ref name="Cline">Cline D; Hofstetter HW; Griffin JR. Dictionary of Visual Science. 4th ed. Butterworth-Heinemann, Boston 1997. ISBN 0-7506-9895-0</ref> With blinking, the eyes are constantly being bathed by a thin film of fluid (the tears), which is crucial to maintain lubrification and proper eye health. The tears also flush out and wash away foreign bodies.
