Larry-Boy made his full-length cartoon debut in "Larry-Boy! And The Fib From Outer Space", an episode in the hit video series VeggieTales. He had appeared once before in the "countertop" sequences of the episode "Dave and the Giant Pickle." The character is an alter ego of Larry the Cucumber. Larry, fancying himself a superhero poses as Larry-Boy, the defender of the town of Bumblyburg. He eventually learns that he can continue to pretend to be Larry-Boy but that he should not be ashamed of who he really is.

This video was very popular among its fans. The episode was popular enough for Big Idea Productions, the creators of VeggieTales, to make a sequel titled "Larry-Boy and the Rumor Weed". Sales continued to climb, prompting Big Idea to make a separate series for Larry-Boy. Instead of using 3D CGI animation, they used a 2D style of CG that looks similar to traditional animation.

[edit] Larry-Boy 2D Series

The 2D Larry-Boy series ultimately did not do well in sales; critics called it "a cheap animation series." (Big Idea had to stop the series, along with 3-2-1 Penguins!, by the end of 2002 due to declining popularity of both.) The series was originally a parody of the Batman television series; however, it also contains references to other superheroes, even from the Marvel Comics universe. The first episode, Larry Boy and the Angry Eyebrows, briefly shows a superhero, Electromelon, a small sprout who changed to a giant electric watermelon when he gets angry, an obvious reference to The Hulk. The melon even talks like the Hulk: "Sometimes Electromelon gets real angry!", "Okay, Electromelon try what Bok-Choy says!". The series is currently running on qubo.

[edit] Other Larry-Boy Facts

Larry-Boy's headquarters is the Larry-Cave, located deep under Larry's stately manor. He is assisted by his manservant Alfred, played by Archibald Asparagus, who loves horticulture and labors diligently at the Larry-Computer. Larry-Boy drives the Larry-Mobile, which can function as car or jet (and even earth-borer). His costume includes all sorts of gadgets, including his "super-suction ears," which are plungers attached to grappling lines. His belt (which has his initials "LB" in silver), contains a speaker, through which Alfred can communicate to him. His catch-phrase is, "I am that hero!"

Larry-Boy continues to appear in the regular VeggieTales videos.
