Lawrence (IPA: [ˈlɔɹ.ɛns]) is a city in Marion County, Indiana, United States. The population was 38,915 as of the 2000 census.

Lawrence is located on the Northeast side of Indianapolis. Lawrence is located at 39°51′46″N, 85°59′39″W (39.862739, -85.994264)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 52.3 km² (20.2 mi²). 52.0 km² (20.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (0.50%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 38,915 people, 14,853 households, and 10,337 families residing in the city. The population density was 748.3/km² (1,937.8/mi²). There were 16,292 housing units at an average density of 313.3/km² (811.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 78.58% White, 15.51% African American, 0.30% Native American, 1.80% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 1.86% from other races, and 1.87% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.73% of the population.

There were 14,853 households out of which 39.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.1% were married couples living together, 13.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.4% were non-families. 24.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.13.

In the city the population was diversified at 29.9% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 36.2% from 25 to 44, 18.0% from 45 to 64, and 8.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $47,838, and the median income for a family was $56,609. Males had a median income of $38,924 versus $30,406 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,543. About 4.8% of families and 6.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.1% of those age 65 or over.
