León is a province of northwestern Spain, in the northwestern part of the autonomous community of Castile and León. The historic leonese kingdom was integrated by the provinces of León Zamora, Salamanca, Valladolid, Palencia and many other territories in Extremadura and northwest of andalusian province of Huelva. It is bordered by the provinces of Zamora, Ourense, Lugo, Asturias, Cantabria, Palencia, and Valladolid.


About one quarter of its population of 496,655 (2005) lives in the capital, León. The weather is dry, cold during the winter.


There are Roman Catholic cathedrals at León and Astorga. The province shares the Parque Nacional Picos de Europa (in the Picos de Europa mountain range) with Cantabria and Asturias.
