Learnership takes place when learning supports capability to lead.

Leaders in the 21st century often have a goal to change something. Such a need for change might be to improve something e.g. within one's control, or a need to cope with something e.g. outside one's control. Almost every form of change requires learning.

So when change is constant, learning needs to be constant. To be an effective leader, it is paramount to learn constantly. When this activity has the effect of encouraging others to do the same, an act of leadership is occurring.

We might think of learnership taking place for an individual or for a group of individuals. For example, when learnership takes place across an organisation (a team, a school, a business, a charity etc.) it can become a powerful generator of change. This is because learning frequently produces further change as a result of the learning.
