Legal Matter Management or Matter Management can be defined as the comprehensive lifecycle management of legal matters that pertain to the corporate legal department. Matter management software systems and processes are about the administration of Matters, People, Companies, Budgets and Invoices. Many corporations utilize their matter management system for managing outside counsel workload and spending. In addition, matter management systems provide an excellent platform for information organization and distribution while utilizing a tool to ensure legal processes and procedures are being followed consistently.

Legal Matter Management differs from Legal Case Management or case management due to the primary user base. Legal Matter Management software is designed for corporate legal departments while case management is designed for law firms. Also, Legal Matter Management systems tend to enterprise level systems and web based to break down geographic limitations. Case Management systems tend to be client server based and focused on individual law firm offices.
