Leningrad Oblast

Leningrad Oblast (Russian: Ленингра́дская о́бласть, tr.: Leningradskaya oblast) is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast) located in the Northwestern Federal District and named after the revolutionary Vladimir Lenin. The governor is Valery Pavlovich Serdyukov.

The territory surrounds Saint Petersburg, formerly known as Leningrad (1924–1991), but is administratively separate from it. Leningrad Oblast retained its name after the fall of the Soviet Union in spite of the renaming of its namesake city.

The oblast was historically known as Ingria (until 1927), but that region also contained the Karelian Isthmus which was ceded by Finland in 1940.

The oblast has an area of 84,500 km² and population 1,669,205 (as of 2002 Census). The fraction of urban population is 66.4%. The most populous town of the oblast is Gatchina, with 88,659 inhabitants.
