Lienz is a medieval city in Tyrol, Austria. It is the administrative center of the Lienz district (Bezirk) in East Tyrol. Lienz is located on the rivers Isel and Drava, and has a population of c. 12,000 (as of 2001).

It received its city rights on February 25 1242.

Lienz is located at a road junction between the federal Felbertauern road (B108), a road to the Pustertal valley (B100) and South Tyrol, and a road to the Drautal valley and Carinthia. It is also connected by the Austrian Southern Railway.

By the consistent growth of the city of Lienz, some smaller villages which were beyond Lienz formerly, are now widely known to be suburbs of Lienz. Those suburbs contain (clockwise from north): Thurn, Gaimberg, Nußdorf, Debant, Tristach, Amlach and Leisach.
