Lieutenant (Star Trek)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lieutenant is a commissioned Starfleet officer rank in the fictional Star Trek universe.
Lieutenant is the most common rank to appear in the entire Star Trek series. Throughout nearly forty years of production, the rank has been held by several major characters and dozens of extras. The rank can trace its origins to the original pilot episode "The Cage", in which the USS Enterprise's executive officer, "Number One", holds the rank of lieutenant, as does Spock.
The rank exists as early as the 22nd century, when Malcolm Reed holds the rank while serving aboard the Enterprise.
Lieutenant is also common in Star Trek: The Original Series, held by main characters Uhura and Hikaru Sulu, as well as by several guest characters.
In Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Pavel Chekov and Ilia are lieutenants. Although two characters in subsequent films, Saavik and Valeris, are referred to as "lieutenant"s, the Star Trek Encyclopedia states that they are a lieutenant junior grade and lieutenant commander, respectively.<ref>Okuda, Michael & Denise (1994,1997,1999). This era's lieutenant rank pin is first clearly visible in a flashback in Star Trek: The Next Generation's "Dark Page". It is also clearly worn by the tacitcal officer aboard the Enterprise-B (Star Trek: Generations).
Several Star Trek: The Next Generation characters hold the rank of lieutenant, including Geordi La Forge, Ro Laren, and Worf. The spin-off television series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager also feature multiple lieutenants, including Julian Bashir, Jadzia Dax, Tuvok, and (provisionally) B'Elanna Torres. Lieutenant Hawk appears in Star Trek: First Contact.
