Lillestrøm

Lillestrøm is a town and the centre of the municipality of Skedsmo in the county of Akershus, Norway. It is a neighbour to the municipality of Oslo.

Lillestrøms history dates back to the times when timber logs started being sawed up here on river powered sawnills for building materials. Later Lillestrøm got it's own steam sawmill which laid the base for the development of the area which became the town. The area in general was a moss covered swamp-like area which at the times was considered almost uninhabitable. This didn't scare off the workers needing a place to live, in addition to almost non existant property values, the workers started living and settling in the sawmills nearby area, and Lillestrøm was born.

Because of this heritage, Lillestrøm is sometimes mentioned with tongue in mouth as "wood splint town".


Lillestrøm got it's town status as of 1997, and since then there have been a yearly 4 day town fair, which is entirely free of charge (as of yet). It includes music by high profile Norwegian artists, on several outdoor stages, food, retail business exposé and thrill rides an masse. Everything is held in Lillestrøms mainstreet and connecting streets, which is blocked off for the occation.

Lillestrøm has hotels, a brand new cinema, resteurants, a military airport (1913) and research institute, a community outdoor multiple pool swimming complex and a host of other things availiable to it's citizens. It got it's railway station as part of the first Norwegian railway between Oslo and Eidsvoll in 1854.


August 2004 Norway Trade Fairs moved from Sjølyst, Oslo to Lillestrøm.

The local football team, Lillestrøm S.K., plays in the Norwegian premier league (2006).

One of them is Lillestrøm VGS which offers the International Baccalaureate Programme. Another one would be Skedsmo Skole, which is about a 10 minute walk from the train station.
