FIFA assigns a three-letter code (dubbed FIFA Trigramme) to each of its member and non-member countries. These are the official codes used by FIFA and its continental confederations (AFC, CAF, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, OFC and UEFA) as name abbreviations of countries and dependent areas, in official competitions.
[edit] FIFA members
There are currently 207 FIFA members, each one with its unique country code. Montenegro has not been accepted into FIFA yet.
[edit] Non-FIFA members
The following codes refer to countries or dependent areas that are currently not affiliated with FIFA, even though some of them are members of their regional confederations.
1 CAF associate members (Réunion, Zanzibar)
2 CONCACAF members (French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint-Martin, Sint Maarten)
3 OFC associate members (Micronesia, Niue, Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, Tuvalu)

[edit] Obsolete country codes
The following codes are obsolete because a country has ceased to exist, changed its name, changed its code, or has become part of another country.
[edit] FIFA and IOC differences
Although most FIFA codes are the same as the International Olympic Committee country codes used for the Olympic Games, there are still some discrepancies:
There are also some countries that are affiliated to FIFA and not to the International Olympic Committee, and vice-versa:
- FIFA affiliates and non IOC members (11):
- IOC members and non FIFA affiliates (7):
Also note that currently, FIFA has 207 members while the IOC has 204. This is because England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland compete as Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the Olympic Games.
England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have separate football associations.
