This is an incomplete list of Irish by-elections, with the names of the incumbent and victor and their respective parties. By-elections in Ireland occur to fill vacant seats in the Irish parliament, Dáil Éireann. They can be caused by the death, resignation, or expulsion of a sitting Teachta Dála (Member of Parliament). Where seats changed political party at the election, the result is highlighted: green for a Fianna Fáil gain, blue for a Fine Gael gain, red for a Labour gain, lavender for a Democratic Left gain and grey for any other gains.
So far there have been two by-elections during the lifetime of the present Dáil. There were no by-elections during the 7th, 9th, 11th, 22nd, 25th and 26th Dála. The largest period without a by-election was almost 10 years between 1984 and 1994. The largest number of by-elections on one day was eight on March 11, 1925.
Of the 123 by-elections that have taken place since 1923, 87 of them were caused by the death of a sitting TD.
