During the first winter in the New World, the Mayflower colonists suffered greatly from diseases like scurvy, lack of shelter and general conditions onboard ship. 45 of the 104 emigrants died the first winter. Additional deaths during the first year meant that only 53 people were alive to celebrate the first Thanksgiving.<ref name="Thanksgiving">First Thanksgiving, [1], 1998, Pilgrim Hall Museum, accessed August 29, 2006. Note that this list omits Mr. Ely, a hired seaman and Dorothy, a servant.</ref> Of the 18 adult women, 13 died the first winter while another died in May. Only four adult women were left alive for the Thanksgiving.<ref name="Women">Dorothy, the servant of John Carver and Priscilla Mullins were both old enough to be married within a year or two of that first winter; although their exact ages are unknown. So the number of adult women surviving to the first Thanksgiving may be as many as 6 (out of 20).</ref> Includes date of death, where recorded.
