The bishop or Patriarch of Alexandria (Egypt) is believed by both the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Coptic Orthodox Church, as the successors to Saint Mark the Evangelist the author of the Gospel of Mark, and the founder of Christianity in Africa.

In 451 AD, after the conclusion of the Ecumenical Council of Chalcedon, the Coptic Orthodox Church split from the Eastern Orthodox Church of Alexandria.
