The following is an episode list for the Fox animated television series The Simpsons. The series began on December 17, 1989 and finished its 17th season on May 21, 2006. The series has been renewed for a 19th season and further seasons are possible.<ref>The series airs several hold-overs at the beginning of each season, which guarantees a 20th season, assuming a normal 21-22 episode order for seasons 18 and 19.</ref>
As of November 26, 2006, 385 episodes of The Simpsons have aired.
Currently, the first eight seasons are available on DVD with the ninth season available from December 19, 2006 and further releases pending. It has been confirmed that Fox Home Entertainment will try to release two seasons per year.<ref name="DVD">Fox Home Entertainment confirmed a two-per-year release schedule in an email sent to a member at NoHomers.net in 2005. [1]</ref> A feature-length movie, set to open on July 27, 2007, is now in production semi-independently of the television series<ref>The screenplay was written by a portion of the current writing staff, while animation will be produced both at Rough Draft Studios and at Film Roman by a team working independently of the TV series. [2]</ref>. The series is a spin-off of The Tracey Ullman Show, in which the titular family appeared in animated short films.
