List of honorary British Knights

Jump to: navigation, search

This is an incomplete list of people who have been created honorary Knights (or Dames) by the British crown, as well as those who have been raised to the two comparable Orders of Chivalry (Order of Merit and Order of the Companions of Honour) and the Royal Victorian Chain, which do not carry titles.

Honorary awards are made to people who are not citizens of countries that acknowledge the British Sovereign as their head of state. They cannot use the titles of "Sir" or "Dame", but can use the initials of the awards after their names. If such people later acquire British nationality or the nationality of another Commonwealth Realm, then their awards are usually made substantive, and in the case of knighthoods and dameships they can begin to use the titles.

Citizens of a country which was a full part of the British Empire when they received the honour (i.e. who were British subjects at the time) were substantive knights or dames, not honorary, although some chose not to use their title after their country became independent. Citizens of British protectorates and mandated territories, however, received honorary awards. Before 1947, Indian princes and citizens of the princely states were made substantive members of the two Indian orders (Order of the Star of India and Order of the Indian Empire), but honorary members of the other orders. Other Indians, however, were made substantive members of all orders.

In recent years, the following numbers of Honorary Knights and Dames have been created (other than RVOs, which are the Queen's personal prerogative).
