Locked On
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Locked On was a popular radio show which broadcast on BURST, the University of Bristol's student radio station, between 2004 and 2006. The show specialised in playing alternative rock and dance music, interspersed with topical, comic and music-related features. It is sometimes referred to by its full name, Locked On with Nick and Tim. The show's name is a reference to the phrase to be locked on, which means to be in the loop, to be well informed and up-to-date on a subject.

[edit] Presenters
The show was historically presented by Tim Chiosso and Nick Box who, working as a team, built up the show from students' pipedream to radio success in under two years. The pair met in 2002 when living in Wills Hall, famously cohabiting on the ground floor of the Hall's G-Block. It is often said that the two have perfectly complementary tastes in music - while both presenters are fans of alternative music across the board, Tim is well-known for his expertise in the field of rock music and Nick's passion for dance music and electronica was exhibited regularly on the show.
On rare occasions when members of the team were not available, stand-in presenters were found in the form of Ian Herbert (who appeared on several occasions in 2004/2005) and Phil Hinks (who made an appearance in early 2006).
A slightly belligerent guest presenter made several appearances in 2006, broadcasting under the name MC Tunesmith. He was in fact an electronically synthesised voice who had been pre-recorded before the show and who passed judgement on several features.
[edit] History
Ever since the beginnings of their friendship, Tim and Nick were bonded by their love of music and regularly introduced one another to new artists. On separate occasions during 2003, they each gained radio experience making appearances on another BURST show, the Campbell and Co Show. It was in 2004 that their discussions led them to pursue a show of their own, believing their musical taste, knowledge and capacity for banter to be the perfect blend for student radio.
The pair auditioned to host a show on BURST in October 2004, at the start of their third academic year at the University. The application was accepted, and broadcasts of Locked On began within weeks. The show was initially broadcast during the Friday "drivetime" slot, from 4pm - 6pm, and this scheduling remained for the show's first year of broadcast.
The last Friday drivetime show aired in June 2005, when BURST suspended its broadcasts for the University's Summer vacation period. Due to problems with broadcast licenses, BURST did not resume broadcasts as it usually would at the beginning of the academic year in 2005. This affected Locked On, and no further shows were broadcast until February 2006 when BURST finally resumed its schedule. Due to constraints on the presenters' time, Locked On could no longer be broadcast during its traditional slot. Instead, it was moved to the same drivetime 4pm - 6pm slot on a Thursday afternoon, and it continued to be broadcast at this time until the show reached its final episode in June 2006. Locked On's renaissance in 2006 was hailed by many to be a major step forward for Nick and Tim, whose broadcasting had matured and whose professionalism had really come to the fore, evident in many of their 2006 features.
Much to many fans' and the presenters' disappointment, Locked On's life came to an end in 2006 with the graduation of both Nick and Tim from the University of Bristol. This had always been an inevitability due to both presenters' aspirations in other careers, leaving them both without the time nor the opportunity to continue with Locked On. The show broadcast its final episode on 15th June, 2006. Nick and Tim took the chance to showcase some of Locked On's best content. The episode was a musical orgy for any hardened fan - a "favourite" song was chosen for every classic Locked On artist, sparking much debate between presenters and listeners.
