[edit] Past and present
Charles Dickens, lived around the Borough(SE1)in his childhood when his father was jailed in the Marshalsea debtors prison. Serval of novels, notably Little Dorrit and Oliver Twist have scenes set in the area based on Dickens' experience.
Although much of the South Bank area was redeveloped after bomb damage in World War II, there remain areas, particularly around Borough High Streeet and Shad Thames which retain much of their historic character
The Borough is getting more and more modernised, with redevelopment taking place nearly everywhere. The latest proposals are further from the riverside at Elephant & Castle. This major redevelopment is not planned to finish until 2018.
