The oldest known reference to Losser dates from the tenth century <ref name="stenvert-1998">Stenvert, R. et al. (1998). Monumenten in Nederland: Overijssel, p. 213–215, 240. Zwolle: Waanders Uitgevers. ISBN 900-400-9200-1.</ref>. Originally, the village consisted of two separate parts. Both were almost completely destroyed when on September 21, 1665, troops from Münster set fire to them<ref name="buisman-2000">Buisman, J. (2000). One of the town's oldest buildings is the Martinitoren (St. Martin's Tower), dating from around 1500 and the only remaining part of a church demolished in 1903.

[edit] Overdinkel

For the Netherlands, Overdinkel is a relatively young town. It came into being around 1900, when houses were built for Dutch textile workers who were employed in the nearby German town of Gronau<ref name="stenvert-1998" />.

[edit] Geography

A few kilometers west of De Lutte, close to the border with Oldenzaal, lies the Tankenberg, a hill the top of which (85 m) is the highest point in the province.

The municipality's most important body of water is the river Dinkel.
