Lost Souls (book)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lost Souls is a 1992 horror novel, the first written by Poppy Z. Brite. It features the first and only novel-length adventure of Brite's Steve and Ghost characters, popularized in her numerous short stories. The novel is an extended version of the short story "The Seed of Lost Souls".
Several characters introduced in this novel make appearances in Brite's second novel, Drawing Blood, though it is not a direct sequel.

[edit] Characters
[edit] Steve Finn and Ghost
Steve Finn and his best friend Ghost are fictional characters featured in the novel Lost Souls and numerous short horror stories by Poppy Z. Brite. Despite their popularity with fans, Brite has confirmed that there will be no more stories involving Steve and Ghost.
[edit] Steve
Steve was raised in Missing Mile, North Carolina. He works in a record shop in his home town called the Whirling Disc.
[edit] Ghost
Ghost was raised by his grandmother Miz Deliverance in the mountains of North Carolina. He's something of a mystic, born with the usually uncontrollable ability to see ghosts, read minds, and see the future.
[edit] Lost Souls?
Steve and Ghost's band, Lost Souls? is relatively popular in underground culture, particularly in their (fictional) hometown of Missing Mile, North Carolina. Ghost is the vocalist, and Steve plays guitar. Lost Souls? has toured across the United States, and they frequently perform at the local club The Sacred Yew.

[edit] Vampires
The vampires of this novel are quite dissimilar to those of traditional lore. Rather than being a human changed to the undead, these people are another race entirely, born as vampires instead of sired. While many feed on blood, this is not always the case, (e.g. feeding on love and beauty). Those who do drink blood do not even have naturally sharp teeth, due to their race having become unpure by interbreeding with humans. The teeth are filed in order to puncture the skin.
[edit] Nothing (aka Jason)
A teenage vampire adopted by humans as a baby. Born in New Orleans, he was taken to Feeling disconnected from the life he's living, Nothing leaves home in search of the band Lost Souls? and perhaps even his real family...
[edit] Zillah
Nothing's father as well as his lover. His distinguishing features include his mesmerizing green eyes and the purple, green, and gold dyed streaks in his hair.
[edit] Twig and Molochai
Zillah's companions, who are twins, they are described as having "half a brain each."
[edit] Christian
Bartender in New Orleans and lover of Nothing's pregnant mother. He is far older than any of the other vampires in the novel.
