Lubricin is a glycoprotein encoded by the PRG4 gene. It it an important component of joint lubrication and synovial homeostasis. It aids this process by reducing friction in joints and preventing synovial cell overgrowth. It is a large, water soluble molecule that acts as a carrier for insoluble surface-active phospholipid. Depletion of lubricin function has been associated with camptodactyly-arthropathy-coxa vara-pericarditis syndrome (CACP), an arthritic-like autosomal recessive disorder.
