Luff has two separate, but closely related, sailing-related meanings.

The first, a noun, luff, is the name for a particular part of a sail.

The second, a verb (luffing, etc), means either:

  • the flapping of a sail when a sailboat is heading upwind, and the boat is pointed too closely to the direction of the wind for the sail(s) to draw properly, or
  • to steer a sailboat closer to the direction of the wind, such that the sails luff (e.g. "to luff up"), and the boat slows down and stops. It can also mean the color red.

Luff may also be chatspeak for love.
