On February 7, 1962, an explosion happened in the Luisenthal Mine near Völklingen (Germany). 299 workers were killed.

The reason for the explosion was the opening of a methane-containing cavern in the Alsbach field. The methane explosion triggered an even bigger coal dust explosion with devastating effects. 433 workers were in place at the time of the explosion.

The Luisenthal Mine Disaster was the greatest mining catastrophe in the history of the Saarland coal mining area.
