Man Group plc (LSE: EMG) is one of the world's largest futures contract brokers and a leading global provider of alternative investment products. It is a United Kingdom based company, headquartered in London, and it is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index.
Man Group have a history reaching back over 200 years, starting with a Broking business founded by James Man. It was floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1994 and in September 2000 the company changed its name from E D & F Man Group plc to Man Group plc.
The company currently employs over 4,000 people in 15 countries. They have key centers in London, Pfäffikon (Switzerland), Chicago, Kansas City, New York, Paris, Singapore and Sydney. Man Group has two main operating divisions:
- Man Investments - asset management services
- Man Financial brokerage services
Funds under management as of October 2006 are $56.8 billion, of this 61% is contributed by individual investors.
In November 2005, Man Group acquired Refco, LLC the U.S. commodity-futures business arm of the bankrupt Refco, Inc., after Refco internal auditors discovered the corporate scandal involving the ex-CEO and Chairman, Phillip R. Bennett, in which millions of dollars in debts were hidden from investors.
The group is also known for sponsoring the Man Booker Prize.
