TV.com summary

Aqua Teen Hunger Force (also known as ATHF or simply Aqua Teen) is an American animated television series shown on Cartoon Network as part of its Adult Swim late-night programming block. It premiered on December 30, 2000.

The show is about three anthropomorphic fast food items and their life together in New Jersey. The Aqua Teens were originally detectives; as the series progressed, however, the crime-solving aspect of the show was quickly abandoned. There is very little continuity between episodes: virtually all of the recurring cast members have died at least once. The focus is instead on character interaction and a pervasive form of brutal, sarcastic, and often surreal humor. ATHF is one of the four original Williams Street series that aired on Adult Swim in 2001 (Sealab 2021, The Brak Show, and Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law being the other three) and is the longest running original series on the network alongside Harvey Birdman. Episodes vary between TV-PG and TV-14 ratings, though recent episodes have had TV-MA ratings.

[edit] Overview

[edit] Origins

The Aqua Teens were originally created for an episode of Space Ghost Coast to Coast. The episode, "Baffler Meal" (a parody of McDonald's Happy Meal), featured a prototypical version of the Aqua Teen Hunger Force that resembled the future characters but differed in appearance, personality, and voice. "Baffler Meal" did not air for several years (it was not even animated or produced until after ATHF became popular); instead, the Space Ghost episode was re-written as "Kentucky Nightmare", while the Aqua Teens debuted in "Rabbot," the pilot episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force. A full first season of ATHF was put into production shortly thereafter; its first episode regular episode was shown on September 16, 2001. Four seasons have been produced to date; the fourth season began on December 4, 2005, with three episodes, and now continues with ten new episodes starting October 22, 2006.

[edit] Cold openings

During the first two seasons, episodes cold opened with a glimpse into the laboratory of Dr. Weird (within the Belle Isle Asylum, located on the perpetually stormy South Jersey shore and taken from an episode of Johnny Quest). The criminally insane Dr. Weird and his baffled assistant Steve use the first several seconds of the show to create monsters, disasters, and random silliness, generally accompanied by the phrase "Gentlemen, behold!" as Dr. Weird unveils his latest accomplishment. In earlier episodes of the first season, the monsters formed the basis for the plot. As the crime-fighting element of the program quickly became less prominent, the Dr. Weird segment became a non sequitur opening gag.

In the third season, Dr. Weird was dropped in favor of segments from a pilot episode of Spacecataz, an un-aired series made by the creators of Aqua Teen. These segments featured the Mooninites (Ignignokt and Err) and the Plutonians (Emory and Oglethorpe) clashing with each other; trading insults, gestures, and practical jokes. The full Spacecataz episode is on the Volume 4 DVD as a bonus feature.

Cold openings have been dropped altogether in the fourth season.

[edit] Production

Aqua Teen Hunger Force is written and directed by Dave Willis and Matt Maiellaro. Much of the dialogue is supplemented with adlibs and improvisation by the voice talent.<ref>Flak Magazine. Aqua Teen Hunger Force, The Interview, 09-22-03. Retrieved on 2006-11-31.</ref> The show is edited and animated to include this improvisation. The show is produced by Williams Street Studios. Noted 1980s rapper Schoolly D performs the theme song.

[edit] Title

The title of the show is largely a misnomer: the characters have no major affiliation with water (though many episodes involve their neighbor's pool), they are not teenagers per se, and they are rarely shown as any kind of a force. They do display ravenous hunger on occasion, however. In early episodes (particularly the first season), the trio were identified by Master Shake as the "Aqua Teen Hunger Force", solving crimes for money. Shortly into its run, the premise and the use of the name by the characters was dropped. According to DVD commentary, the premise was originally added to appease Cartoon Network network heads, who "didn't want to air a show about food just going around and doing random stuff."

The title originally had more meaning, in the episode "Baffler Meal", which was made from the script for Space Ghost Coast to Coast in which the characters were originally to appear, Meatwad, Master Shake and Frylock supposedly battle hunger for teenagers whilst grotesquely promoting their fast food company, Burger Trench.

[edit] Main characters

[edit] Master Shake

Image:MasterShake.gif Master Shake (voiced by Dana Snyder), also known as "Shake Zula" or simply "Shake", is a simple-minded, mean-spirited, sadistic, and self-centered milkshake in the form of a white cup with a pink straw and two yellow chicken gloves. Shake's role is to make wild and illogical decisions, presumptions, and demands. He also considers himself (unilaterally) to be the group's leader.

A lot of the series' humor is based on the thoughtless abuses inflicted by Shake. Oblivious to any suffering his behavior causes (other than Meatwad's, which is his greatest joy), he will become violently petulant the moment he feels he has been wronged in the slightest. He is utterly incapable of learning anything from even the most catastrophic consequences of his actions. Master Shake is rarely productive and can often be found watching television or, more characteristically, destroying the television and demanding a new one. Shake's usual victim is the relatively passive and generally clueless Meatwad. Shake often causes trouble for their neighbor Carl as well, usually as a side effect of one of Shake's ill-conceived plans. However, Carl and Shake get along somewhat due to the fact that they are both willing to try any seemingly crazy idea as long as they believe it will result in personal gain. Shake dies or is maimed somewhat frequently as a result of his plans backfiring on him.

Complementing Shake's laziness is his lack of any overwhelming superpower: when he tries to summon a power, he usually ends up dripping a glob of milkshake or occasionally launching household items from his straw. Ever since "The Drizzle", Shake has the ability to cause any object he holds in his hands to explode simply by throwing it to the ground, somewhat similiar to that of Gambit from the X-Men. However, this is likely just a sight gag to dismiss props in a comical fashion. Shake also has the ability to suck large amounts of liquid through his straw, claiming to require 85 gallons of liquid intake a day. He is seen draining Carl's pool in the episode "Bus Of The Undead." He is, however, adept in the use of a shotgun and a crossbow. Shake is the only Aqua Teen not to have his own room, and he has been known to use Frylock's room in the past, where he has read pornographic magazines and tries to dress up to impress women. He seems to sleep on the chair in front of the television.

Shake also has a tendency to concoct elaborate and seemingly pointless lies to explain his every action and decision. More often than not, he uses these lies with the simple and gullible Meatwad. However, he usually doesn't firmly stick to his more poorly thought out lies and tends to abandon them the moment someone (usually Frylock) begins to doubt his credibility, replacing them with even more outrageous lies. He frequently uses this tactic when he is on the losing end of an argument.

Master Shake has appeared on the fellow Adult Swim show Robot Chicken twice; once in the second season premiere, "Suck It", and again in "1987", his latter appearance as a panelist on "Best Robot Chicken Ever," a spoof of the VH1 show Best Week Ever.

[edit] Frylock

Frylock Frylock (voiced by Carey Means), also known as "Fryman", is a red box of French fries sporting a goatee, dental braces, and a blue mystic jewel embedded in his back. The jewel is said to be the Gem of Idahockalise in the Space Ghost episode "Baffler Meal". He also calls upon "the power of Idahockalise" in a deleted scene from "Rabbot". He uses his fries as limbs. Frylock is scientifically-minded and conducts experiments in his room, which contains his library, supercomputer (which Shake purchased, but avoided actually paying for), cloner, and various other lab equipment. He is the most intellectual of the ATHF characters, and also attempts to provide the others with some sense of morality. Although he has no physical traits to suggest this, Frylock's voice causes others to assume that he is black.

Frylock's comedic role is usually that of the straight man and he acts as the voice of reason to a fault - the foil to Shake's extravagant mistakes, though he is sometimes subject to a certain amount of hubris. He defends Meatwad and tries to keep peace with Carl. Although the detective aspect was dropped long ago, Frylock at times still acts as a detective, investigating strange matters (e.g. the hypno-germs, Carl's wig) while the others couldn't care less. He also once reminded Meatwad after being jailed for a failed shoplifting attempt that he was "a detective and sworn to uphold the law". He also stated in the episode "Carl" that he was a virgin. Frylock has been shown to have a bondage fetish.

Frylock actually possesses several supernatural powers that presumably emanate from his mystic jewel. Among them are the ability to levitate (his only demonstrated form of movement), the ability to shoot projectiles such as lasers, fireballs, telekinetic beams, and even fire extinguisher foam out of his eyes. He also possesses a "Frydar" (a fry that spins like a radar dish) that can pick up most any frequency or location. In one episode, he also transformed one of his fries into a machete, though this was in virtual reality.

Frylock is the only one of the principal characters to not have actually died at all during the series' run (a version of Frylock was killed inside of a virtual reality sequence in one episode). However, in one episode, "Party All The Time", Frylock did suffer from melanoma, which nearly killed him.

[edit] Meatwad

Image:Meatwad.JPG Meatwad (voiced by Dave Willis) is a mass of compressed meat that was not approved for human consumption. Meatwad rolls and hops to get from one place to another. Being made of ground meat, Meatwad is a shapeshifter. He can morph into an igloo, a hot dog, a star, and many other forms, although the hot dog and igloo are his two main shapes. He also has been shown to morph into a large thin square, usually in order to block someone from entering a certain area. On another occasion, he turned into a "meat bridge" for Master Shake. During his time as a circus attraction, he also came up with "Richard Nixon" and "Wayne Gretzky" forms, both of which in fact more closely resemble "Samurai Lincoln," a katana-wielding Abraham Lincoln. Along with his multiple forms, Meatwad can also form triangular arms. He can form several of these at once. Shake and Frylock usually use him to pull a wooden cart called the "Danger Cart" for transportation since they can't afford a car. Other than his shapeshifting, Meatwad doesn't really have superpowers (though several stories focus on plots where he gains powers through unnatural means; such as a t-shirt, a cat-toy brain, and an overabundance of static electricity).

Simple and gullible, with a doe-eyed stare and nearly-toothless crooked grin that reflects his simple-mindedness, Meatwad is constantly abused by Master Shake through his half-thought out practical jokes. His brain is actually a brain-shaped squeaky cat toy. Frylock often acts like Meatwad's parent, trying to educate him and protect him from more mature themes (and from Shake's verbal and physical abuse). Despite Frylock's attempts however, Shake rages on and the Mooninites have repeatedly exposed him to excessive swearing, violence, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and pornography.

Meatwad also has a more sinister side and can become quickly corrupted. The Mooninites have persuaded him to commit crimes on several occasions, and once Meatwad has any kind of power he focuses his megalomaniacal tendencies on Shake. This side of Meatwad reached its apex when, after brandishing a handgun and threatening everyone present, he committed suicide (off-camera) in front of Shake, Frylock and their guest, Tera Patrick. Another less gruesome scene had him using the robotic body developed by Frylock after Carl was decapitated to exact his revenge on Shake: throwing him up in the air and blowing him up with a missle.

Meatwad's room is empty except for filth, his "dolls" (see below), a jambox, meaningless crayon scribblings on the walls, a colander, and a bed, which is a grill with hot coals under it. He has a closet full of sand, which he eats with ketchup on occasion. At one point, Shake is also shown eating it. The light switch by his door has been removed from its socket and lowered so he can reach it. His body consumes all waste materials, so he never needs to go to the bathroom. He compares it to the Thunderdome, except "Two men enter - no man leaves."

Meatwad has been shown to be a huge fan of rap and hip-hop, playing songs from MC Pee Pants, Sir Loin, and Little Brittle (all in fact the same artist) over and over again, usually late at night while his roommates are trying to sleep, thus incurring their wrath. He was converted to heavy metal once after being tricked by Sir Loin, but he began listening to rap again later.

He occasionally is shown with dolls and other toys made out of household items such as an apple named Vanessa, a paper towel tube named Dewey, and Boxy Brown (a 1970s, disco, blaxploitation-influenced box) that speaks to Meatwad and sometimes seems to know things that Meatwad doesn't. Boxy is also known to threaten Meatwad. He is fiercely loyal to these and other friends. Meatwad briefly had a genetically engineered dog named Handbanana.

Meatwad has developed considerably since the first season. He has become somewhat more intelligent, and he frequently outsmarts Shake in the later seasons. His relationship with Shake has also changed. Whereas in the first seasons his relationship with Shake is pure contempt, later on Meatwad forms a rough friendship with Shake (based on their mutual stupidity).

Meatwad developed a brief friendship with another minimally intelligent character, Brak from the fellow Adult Swim shows The Brak Show, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, and Cartoon Planet. During the Adult Swim special New Years Eve Party, Brak and Meatwad became fast friends. Meatwad and Carl also appeared on Best Week Ever and congratulated them on their 100th episode. Meatwad makes an appearance in a Dodge commercial that emphasizes the accelerating and braking qualities of their trucks. He is "coughed up" by a passenger in the vehicle who is "choking". Meatwad splatters against the windshield and says "Sweet!".

[edit] Carl

Carl. Carl Brutananadilewski (voiced by Dave Willis) is the Aqua Teen Hunger Force's neighbor. Carl is the only main character not in the ATHF.

Carl is balding and overweight. He dresses casually, usually wearing a "gold" chain, stained wifebeater shirt, pocketless sweatpants, and green flip-flops. Carl has a collection of pornography, has poor self-esteem, questionable hygiene, and dubious rapport with the opposite sex (Carl has never had consensual sex without money involved). The show has never addressed Carl's employment status beyond his reference to "busting his ass for 20 hours a week" and his claim to "work out of the home." As there have been no accompanying scenes featuring him at work or in possession of a career; whether he does actually have a job is a point of dispute. Carl also has one unseen friend named Terry (apparently a mutual friend of Dr. Weird's) who specializes in illegal amateur surgery and selling human organs.

Carl is a die-hard New York Giants fan (as referenced by a jersey he owns, a football helmet-lamp with the #56 on it, and a picture of Bill Parcells hanging in his living room), as well as a fan of rock bands of the 1980s. He also has a framed jersey of New York Jets lineman Joe Klecko and a picture of former New York Mets all-star catcher Mike Piazza in his room.

Carl considers the Aqua Teens freaks, and generally tries to avoid contact with them; several episodes have shown Carl making an attempt to sell his home. At times, however, he seems to relate to Master Shake and will go along with get-rich-quick schemes Shake comes up with. Over the course of the series, Carl has almost never called the members of the ATHF by their names, instead calling Master Shake "Cup" or "Shakeman" (although more often than not he calls him Shake), Frylock "Fryman", and Meatwad "Meatman". In his attempts to keep the Aqua Teens away from him, he has called the police (he says they eventually stopped taking his calls), attempted to take out a restraining order, surrounded his house with lasers and pulled a gun on Master Shake (which then resulted in the gun backfiring and shooting Carl in the foot). However, in later episodes, Carl seems to have toned down his hostility towards the Aqua Teens and appears to be on better terms with them.

Carl has an above-ground swimming pool in his backyard, which the Aqua Teens frequently use without his permission. They have also occasionally filled it with large amounts of meat-based waste and other miscellaneous items. Master Shake blew it up once during an otherwise peaceful night. Shake also killed himself once in Carl's pool by putting a hose of exhaust from Carl's car in his mouth, swallowing a bottle of sleeping pills, and falling into the pool occupied by piranhas and a toaster causing the pool to turn red with Shake's blood. Frylock also recently filled Carl's pool up with radioactive waste to create a dog for Meatwad named Handbanana, which repeatedly and mercilessly raped Carl.

Carl also has a red Dodge Stealth detailed with the graphics 2 Wycked, which has frequently been destroyed over the course of the show. Carl's home has also been routinely destroyed, such as being melted, infested by thousands of termites, burned down when Meatwad played with matches, the front door ripped off and the walls and ceiling covered in blood, taken away by a machine powered by rainbows, being covered in silk, having a note from Meatwad scratched onto it, and crushed by two giant egg creatures.

Carl is a fan of classic rock and is known to have attended concerts of STYX, Foreigner, Bryan Adams, and Loverboy in the mid-80's. His favorite song is "More Than A Feeling" by Boston. He also enjoys the Foreigner song "Urgent", which he associates with the time he was at their concert and felt up a passed out girl's vomit-covered breasts. He also wrote a song called "I Wanna Rock Your Body ('Til the Break of Dawn)", which he has only played via air guitar.

Carl has a habit of being assaulted, injured, dying, and even being brought back to life due to one of the Aqua Teens' schemes. Carl has died more times than any other character on the show, yet he invariably appears in the next episode unharmed.

[edit] Dr. Weird

Dr. Weird (voiced by C. Martin Croker) is a mad scientist who lives in an abandoned mental asylum on the perpetually rainy Jersey Shore. The outdoor shots of the asylum are from the episode "Escape to Questworld" from the short running Cartoon Network original The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest. Dressed in a colorful outfit reminiscent of 1960s cartoon villains, replete with glass space helmet (which Dr. Weird calls his "Hair-arium" or "hair-heater"), he starts many shows by presenting his latest creation with his catch phrase "Gentlemen, behold!" to his lone lab assistant Steve (and occasionally his Hispanic janitor Javier). His first nonsensical inventions include a giant rabbit robot called "Rabbot" and a rainbow-making machine that functions as a powerful tractor beam. Although in early episodes Dr. Weird's inventions provided a point of focus for the episode, this ended midway through the first season, and after that point were simply comic nonsequiturs.

Dr. Weird has a small child which is half metal, half human, due to his apparent one-night stand with a lawnmower. He also has an apparent ability to detach his head from his body and make it grow to immense proportions (as referenced in one episode where he bit Steve, who was making fun of him, in half with the giant head) and shoot tacos from his mouth (which he did to Javier when he tried to steal his "W" necklace, causing him to explode). Dr. Weird also seems to like making murderous corn.

In Frylock's room, a photo of a younger Dr. Weird with brown hair and Frylock can be seen in the background; this either suggests some things about Dr. Weird's and Frylock's scientific interest, or suggests that the ATHF may have originally been monsters of Dr. Weird's invention. One episode implies that his name is Terry and is friends with Carl, as in it, he promises to call a friend to get a new brain for Meatwad, and the opening shows him receiving a phone call and conspiring to steal Steve's brain.

[edit] Steve

Image:Aqua teen steve.jpg Steve (also voiced by C. Martin Croker) is Dr. Weird's assistant. Red haired, wearing a lab coat, and frequently holding a test tube, Steve becomes aware of Dr. Weird's insanity over the course of the first three seasons of the series, but he remains his assistant nonetheless. In various episodes, Steve has had his brain removed, has been assaulted by animate corn on two separate occasions, and has walked out on Dr. Weird's experiments numerous times. By the end of the second season, Steve actually resigns as Dr. Weird's assistant, and as the Dr. Weird openings are no longer used, this was the end of Steve's plot development.

[edit] MC Pee Pants

MC Pee Pants, a.k.a. Sir Loin, a.k.a. Little Brittle and the C-Bag (voiced by Chris Ward, also known as mc chris) is a demonspawn rap artist from Hell, who is reincarnated in different forms. With each return, he establishes a new name and identity, but his voice, personality, clothing, and yellow eyes remain constant.

His forms have included a giant spider (the original MC Pee Pants), a cow called Sir Loin, an elderly human known as Little Brittle, a baby human, a vampire (after being bitten as Little Brittle), a bat (his form after dying as vampire Little Brittle), and a worm (his second MC Pee Pants incarnation). In each incarnation, he wears a diaper, a shower cap and a gold chain around his neck. He usually has an elaborate scheme to take over the world, which begins by sending instructions to his listeners, which consists of pretty much only Meatwad and Carl, in the form of a hit rap single such as "I Want Candy", "4 Da Shorteez", and "Come Visit Me Dawg". His schemes usually involve a song asking the listener to go to an abandoned warehouse at "612 Wharf Avenue" (a real address in Red Bank, New Jersey), and are invariably ridiculous and unnecessarily complicated. For example, as MC Pee Pants, he plotted to bore a hole into hell with a blood-sugar powered drill for purposes of unleashing demons who would then operate a diet-pill pyramid scheme for him.

[edit] The Mooninites

The Mooninites, Ignignokt (voiced by Dave Willis) and Err (voiced by Matt Maiellaro), are the pixelated, two-dimensional (though they claim to have 5,000 dimensions) inhabitants of the Moon who see the Earth as primitive in every way. The two come often to Earth with selfish intentions and use the Aqua Teens to achieve their goals, usually taking advantage of the impressionable Meatwad.

Ignignokt, the leader, is green and larger than his purple counterpart Err. Ignignokt usually speaks with a self-important, condescending air and is openly selfish and solipsistic. Err is his hyperactive and trash-talking tag-along. Err often yells using profanity to get his point across. In the fourth season, Err admitted that their delinquency is due to a need for attention. Ignignokt claims that carving "DA MOON RULZ #1" into Carl's car is a sign of 'trust and friendship'.

Err fits precisely in a notch in Ignignokt's head; joining together activates their super power: they can fire a large square slow-moving (and easily avoided) video-game "bullet" they call the "Quad Laser", which is a magnification of their smaller, faster-moving, individual laser attacks. A larger and more powerful version of this attack, the "Quad Glacier" (done by replicating themselves into the form of a massive pistol), moves at a pace that barely registers to the naked eye.

According to the creators, the Mooninites were originally supposed to be the spirits of the E.T. Atari 2600 game cartridges which were buried in a garbage pit in New Mexico due to horrible sales.

[edit] The Plutonians

The Plutonians, Oglethorpe (voiced by Andy Merrill) and Emory (voiced by Mike Schatz), are two spiny extraterrestrial creatures who are orange and green, respectively, and usually sport nothing but sweat bands (although Oglethorpe wears his below his mouth, so Emory refers to it as a "drool band"). According to the show's website, they became misshapen and deformed after trying to retrieve their keys in a woodchipper. They plan to eventually conquer the Earth, but instead spend more time devising bizarre, ill-advised ideas, bickering with each other, taking drugs, using their version of the Stargate (or the Fargate, as Oglethorpe calls it to avoid lawsuits) to steal cable, and feuding with the Mooninites.

Oglethorpe is high-strung and easily angered, speaks in a thick Austrian accent, and conceives most of their plans. Emory, on the other hand, is much more passive and perhaps more intelligent. Oglethorpe notes that he and the Mooninites attended high school together. Both Plutonians are named after figures in Georgian history, those being John Emory and James Oglethorpe, by way of the universities that were founded after them, Emory University and Oglethorpe University. This is likely because the show itself is produced in Atlanta, Georgia.

They are easily the most incompetent of the Aqua Teen's enemies; Ignignokt refers to them as "teh suck," both an accurate summary of their abilities and a reference to an internet slang. They command a huge spaceship that they barely know how to operate. The Plutonians ship is actually Uglor's Ship "The Savage Star" from an original Space Ghost episode "Planet of the Space Monkeys".

The spikes on their body can squirt out a foul-smelling "soap" (which Frylock has pointed out may in fact be waste), which is supposedly used to clean the inside of their spaceship. This is revealed in the episode "Space Conflict from Beyond Pluto", in which the Aqua Teens first encounter The Plutonians. There have also been numerous references that they may in fact use marijuana on a regular basis.

[edit] Boxy Brown

Boxy Brown is Meatwad's blaxploitation-influenced imaginary friend. He is a cardboard box that has a face drawn on it using black permanent marker, and he sports an afro. He rarely speaks, but when he does there is disco-lovemaking music playing in the background, and he is heard only by Meatwad. He often threatens the Aqua Teens and demands respect from Meatwad. He also refers to himself as "The Duke of New York, A number one" (a reference to Escape From New York).

[edit] Episodes

Aqua Teen Hunger Force has run on Adult Swim for four seasons. The fourth season resumed on October 22, 2006.

[edit] Music

On The Mouse and The Mask in 2005, MF DOOM and Danger Mouse expanded on the theme of ATHF characters in the track "ATHF". The song begins with Meatwad parodying the braggadocio of gangster rappers, then having a discussion with Carl over good music - "Where's the keyboard, the tambourine, the guitars, the stuff that white people like? I don't know, something badass...". After a rap describing Meatwad, Frylock, and Master Shake, the song ends with Master Shake attempting to collaborate with the producers of the album. Another track from the record, "Vats of Urine", features a cameo with the Mooninites and their normal, egotistical banter. A hidden track at the end of the CD contains Meatwad rapping a verse from MF DOOM's "Beef Rapp".

The Mooninites have their own theme music which recurs on the closing credits of several episodes that feature them. Performed by the rapper Schoolly D (who also raps the regular opening theme), each of the three individual verses is featured on the credits of three different episodes.
