Master keying is keying system for a group of locks where each lock has an individual key that operates only that lock and a master key, which operates all locks in that group. The complexity of master-keyed systems vary widely with need, and can be designed where you have sub-masters which act like a master key, but only opens a limited number of locks within the system. Master-keyed lock systems are designed with a carefully designed keying chart to insure the system maintains security integrity so that previously issued keys are not re-used, or accidentally re-created.
