Mercury-Redstone was a subprogram of Project Mercury which comprised flights and tests using the Redstone Booster.

[edit] Mission Numbering

The official Mercury mission numbering designation was a two letter designation which corresponded to the launch vehicle type, followed by a dash then a 1 or two character designation of the flight/test number. So the official designation for the first U.S. manned suborbital spaceflight was MR-3.

[edit] Redstone Launch Vehicle Numbering

Mercury Redstone launch vehicles used a similar numbering scheme with a space substituted for the dash. In most cases the booster number did not correspond with the Mission number, another source of potential confusion.

[edit] Mission and Launch Vehicle pairings

The missions flown in Mercury-Redstone were:

  • MR-1 using launch vehicle "MR 1"
  • MR-1A using launch vehicle "MR 3"
  • MR-2 using launch vehicle "MR 2"
  • MR-BD using launch vehicle "MR 5"
  • MR-3 using launch vehicle "MR 7"
  • MR-4 using launch vehicle "MR 8"
