The Mercury Mariner compact crossover SUV was introduced in 2005. It is a sibling of the Mazda Tribute (and its successor, the CX-5) and Ford Escape, although it is slightly more upmarket than the other two. Mechanically, it is identical to the Ford Escape. It also includes stylistic differences, such as a two-tone interior, European-style turn signal repeaters, monotone cladding, and the signature Mercury "waterfall" front grille.

In 2006 a Mariner Hybrid was put onto the market. It is very similar to its sibling, the Ford Escape Hybrid.

The Mariner received exterior (front and rear) updates and interior restyling for the 2008 model year. The vehicle debuted on October 6, 2006 at the South Florida International Auto Show and was touted as a new direction for the Mercury marque in general.
