Middle Schools in England

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

Since the Education Act 1964, it has been possible for local authorities in England and Wales to open Middle Schools which cross the traditional primary / secondary divide.

After a surge to over 1000 schools in the 1980s, there now remain fewer than 400, in just 23 local authorities. Over half of these are expected to close in coming years.

All Middle Schools must, by law, be deemed either primary or secondary. These are shown accordingly by a (P) or (S). Middle-deemed-Primary schools normally cater for pupils aged up to 12, while Middle-deemed-Secondary cater for those aged up to 13 or 14. This list includes the "deemed-Primary" combined schools for pupils aged 5 to 12.
