Middle Stone Age

The Middle Stone Age (or MSA) was a period of African Prehistory between Early Stone Age and Late Stone Age. It began around 200.000 years ago and ended around 30.000 years ago. It is considered as an equivalent of European Middle Paleolithic.

Middle Stone Age artefacts were found at Blombos Cave in South Africa.

Middle Stone Age, otherwise known as the Mesolithic period, saw a gradual transition from a food-gathering and hunting economy to a food-producing one and witnessed a gradual domestication of animals as well. Likewise, the movement toward the use of plants and their seeds as an important source of nourishment was also not sudden. Evidence seems to support the possibility that the Paleolithic hunters and gatherers had already grown crops to supplement their normal sources of food.
