Minton's Playhouse
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Minton's Playhouse was a bar and club established by the tenor saxophonist Henry Minton on West 118th Street, on the first floor of the Cecil Hotel in New York City in 1938. The responsibility of running the club passed to former bandleader Teddy Hill in 1940.
Many jazz musicians, such as Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, and Max Roach associated in after-hours jam sessions at Minton's, and these sessions are often cited as important in the development of bebop, then dubbed "modern jazz". Jerry Newman, then a student at Columbia recorded some of these and they were issued by Onyx in the 1970s and on CD by Highnote more recently.
Minton's was shuttered in the early 70’s following a devastating fire at the hotel. It remained closed for more than thirty years, finally re-opening on Friday May 19, 2006 as the Uptown Jazz Lounge at Minton's Playhouse.
