The 56th Miss World pageant took place in Warsaw, Poland on Saturday, September 30th at Sala Kongresowa, the main 2,897-seat auditorium at the Palace of Culture and Science. It was the first time ever that the pageant was held in an European city other than London, United Kingdom, having previously been held there in 2002 after the Nigeria Controversy. The pageant officialy concluded after Taťána Kuchařová from Czech Republic was crowned as the 56th Miss World.

A total of 104 nations antended the pageant where Iceland's Unnur Birna Vilhjálmsdóttir, Miss World 2005, crowned her successor. The 2006 edition was the third largest in terms of participating nations, it is next to the 2003 and 2004 editions that featured 106 and 107 delegates respectively. All contestants were divided in six regional groups: Africa, Americas, Asia Pacific, Caribbean, Northern Europe and Southern Europe. A group of semifinalists was be selected out of each group where Tanzania's Nancy Sumari (Miss World Africa), Mexico's Dafne Molina (Miss World Americas), Korea's Eun Young Oh (Miss World Asia Pacific), Puerto Rico's Ingrid Rivera (Miss World Caribbean), Iceland's Unnur Birna Vilhjálmsdóttir (Miss World Northern Europe) and Italy's Sofia Bruscoli (Miss World Southern Europe) were succeeded by the new six regional Miss World.

Gdynia was the host of the Miss Beach Beauty contest, Gizycko hosted the Miss Sport contest and Wrocław hosted the Miss Talent competition. The fourth event was Beauty With a Purpose.

Taťána Kuchařová from Czech Republic was crowned Miss World out of 104 contestants, with Romania named first runner-up, followed by Australia as second runner-up.

During the month of September four competitions were held from which the winner of each was fast tracked into the semifinals. Miss Beach Beauty was selected on the September 7th at the city of Gdynia. Miss Sport was held on September 12th on the city of Gizycko and the Miss Talent contest was celebrated on September 20th at Wrocław. The Beauty with a Purpose winner was announced on September 30th during the final telecast.

Besides the 4 fast track winners, 6 regional contestants selected by SMS and internet votes and 6 regional contestants selected by a group of judges made the Top 16 Semifinalists. However due to a reported tie scores of India and Australia from Asia Pacific region, the number of semifinalists increased to 17.


THE REGIONAL MISS WORLD


Out of the 17 semifinalists a group of judges selected the winner of each regional group and received the respective Miss World Regional Title. All of them made the Top 6 Finalists.

ViewersTwo billion people in 200 countries across the globe tuned-in Sunday for the 56th Miss World beauty pageant grand finale in Warsaw, Poland. Viewers were also able to crown one of the 104 national beauty queen finalists Miss World 2006 using a special short message service (SMS) system.

[edit] About the Delegates

  • Ivana Knezevic was be the first Miss Montenegro ever at any international beauty pageant. But most importantly, she was be the very first and official representative from Montenegro at any international event since the country's independence on June 3, 2006.
  • Eboundt Fatouma Blanda, current Miss Republic of Congo was going to compete in Miss World 2006. Unfortunately she did not attend due to the expiration of the participation deadline. However, it was confirmed from Ngalla Ibata, president of COMICO (Comite Miss Congo), that Eboundt Blanda would represent the Republic of Congo at Miss Earth in The Philippines (originaly Chile) in late 2006. The nation is confirmed for Miss World 2007.
  • Nepal and Swaziland, will not take part in Miss World 2006. Nepal will not take part due to the political turmoil in the country, the national pageant was moved to January 2007. Swaziland did not have enough time, financial assistance, and an organized commitee to carry out the national pageant.
  • Malawi and Belize held their national pageants, but the organizers have decided that their respective winners will go to Miss World 2007.
  • Soledad Gagliardo, Miss Mundo de Uruguay 2006, was replaced by her first runner-up because of unknown reasons.
  • Fawyeza Mohamed, Miss Egypt 2006, withdrew from the contest after failing to complete visa paperwork on time.
  • Albania, Lithuania, New Zealand and Switzerland did not attend after the respective organizations failed to select a representative on time. Switzerland, on the other hand selected a delegate on September 9, 2006 for both Miss Universe and Miss World. It will be the first time since 1984 that Switzerland is sending candidates to both pageants.
