Mississauga Transit
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mississauga Transit (MT) is the city of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada's public transportation operation.
The city's Transportation and Works department is in charge of its operation. It only operates buses, but as part of the Greater Toronto Area, is connected to Commuter Rail with GO Transit, and to the TTC Subway, and is a member of the Canadian Urban Transit Association.

[edit] History
MT was first operated by Travelways Limited as Mississauga Transit Systems with 4 buses in 1969, but it was acquired by the city's newly formed Mississauga Transit in 1974, incorporating the former towns of Mississauga, Port Credit and Streetsville. Services began on November 1 1973.
It later acquired routes, formerly operated by others such as;
- TTC's Port Credit 74 bus, in February 1976, that had operated on Lakeshore Road from Long Branch since 1935. This succeeded a former interurban railroad, dating back to 1892 as the Toronto and Mimico Electric Railway and Light Company.
- Gray Coach Lines, and later GO Transit, also served intercity routes on Dundas Street, and Hurontario Street, both being provincial highways before the construction of present freeways such as Highways 401, 403, 410, and 427.
- Streetsville had been served by Streetsville Coach Lines, and
- Malton is still served by TTC's 58 Malton bus. "Local services" in Malton were provided since 1969, and expanded after 1973.
[edit] Terminals
The Mississauga Transit Central Terminal is located at Square One Shopping Centre. It is a key bus terminal, serving both Mississauga Transit and GO Transit buses; It opened in October 1997, replacing a loop at the other side of the mall. [edit] Express services
Mississauga Transit presently operates peak-hour express routes.
During the summer of 2005, some changes have been made to the designations, as these were originally numbered in the "80" series;
- On August 2, 2005, Route 202 Hurontario Express was launched.
- In September 2005, Routes 81, 86, and 87 were renumbered as Route 201 Dundas Express, Route 206 Burnhamthorpe Express, and Route 230 Sheridan Express.
- In the Spring of 2006, Route 88, the seasonal Wonderland Express, was renumbered 288 Wonderland Express, and provides service to/from the City Centre Transit Centre to Paramount Canada's Wonderland.
Each of these routes previously terminated at various points in the west, and all of the "80" routes once went to Islington subway station in the east:
- Route 82 Financial-Argentia, and
Route 82A Financial-Meadowvale both terminate in Meadowvale in the north-west, runs mostly along Highway 401 and 427.
- Route 89 Meadowvale-Subway, terminates at Meadowvale Town Centre in the north-west, and runs along a zigzag of roads towards the east, including Winston Churchill Boulevard, Britannia Road, Eglinton Avenue, and Highway 427.
Previously, Express Routes had also operated along;
- Route 83 along Bloor Street,
- Route 84 along The Queensway, and
- Route 85 along north-south Dixie Road, not serving Islington Station.
After September 6, 2005, the "200 Series" includes:
- Route 201--Dundas Express, runs mostly along Dundas Street, and terminates at South Common Centre in the west.
- Route 202--Hurontario Express, began service on August 2, 2005 along Hurontario Street, from Port Credit (GO Station) to Brampton's Shoppers World at Steeles Avenue, by-passing the City Centre Transit Centre, and stopping only at Queensway, Paisley Road, Dundas Street, Central Parkway, Burnhamthorpe Road, Robert Speck Parkway (near Square One), Eglinton Avenue, Matheson Blvd., Britannia Road, Courtney Park Drive, Derry Road, and County Court Drive/Ray Lawson Blvd. in Brampton, to better connect with Brampton Transit.
- Route 206--Burnhamthorpe Express, runs mostly along Burnhamthrope Road, terminates at South Common Centre in the west, and stops at Square One Shopping Centre in between termini.
- Route 230--Sheridan Express (formerly 87) runs from Islington Subway to the Sheridan Business area near Winston Churchill and Queen Elizabeth Way.
- Route 288--Wonderland Express, a seasonal service between [Square One Transit Terminal and Paramount Canada's Wonderland, an amusement park in Vaughan.

[edit] Schedule and information
Mississauga Transit's paper Ride Schedule ended in 2004 and all schedules from 2005 onward were viewed from their system's website only.
Mississauga Transit provides an up-to-date bus schedule via their CityLink telephone service. MT has released a schedule finder on their website, called Click 'n Ride with information specific to each bus stop in November 2005.
