Molecular mimicry

Molecular mimicry is a phenomenon associated with some pathogens, where the antigens evoking an immune response have enough similarity to the body's own proteins to cause an autoimmune reaction, such as in rheumatoid arthritis, mediated by "cross reactive" T cells and/or circulating antibodies.
