Mooringsport, Louisiana

Mooringsport is a township in Caddo Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 833 at the 2000 census.

It was the birthplace of the blues singer and guitarist Huddie William Ledbetter, aka. Leadbelly.

Mooringsport is located at 32°41′13″N, 93°57′42″W (32.687029, -93.961630)^GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 3.0 km² (1.2 mi²). 3.0 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.85% is water.

As of the census^GR2 of 2000, there were 833 people, 334 households, and 228 families residing in the township. The population density was 277.3/km² (716.6/mi²). There were 397 housing units at an average density of 132.1/km² (341.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the township was 80.19% White, 17.77% African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.36% from other races, and 1.32% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.72% of the population.

There were 334 households out of which 34.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.6% were married couples living together, 18.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 27.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.02.

In the township the population was spread out with 28.3% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 93.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.6 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $32,177, and the median income for a family was $40,625. Males had a median income of $29,167 versus $21,875 for females. The per capita income for the township was $14,589. About 9.8% of families and 10.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.7% of those under age 18 and 14.2% of those age 65 or over.
