Moothakunnam

Moothakunnam is a small village in the Ernakulam district of Kerala, south India.

Moothakunnam is thirty kilometers from Ernakulam City and twenty-five kilometers from Cochin International Airport. It sits between the towns of North Paravur and Kodungallur. It is eight kilometers from Cherai Beach, a tourist spot.

The village contains a temple to Shankara Narayana called Sree Narayana Mangalam temple, which was blessed by Sree Narayana Guru in the early part of the twentieth century. The temple's governing authority runs many educational institutions.

Three kilometers from the village is a Christian church said to have been sanctified by a disciple of Jesus (St. Thomas the Apostle).

The first mosque built in India is also three kilometers from the village of Moothakunnam.

Moothakunnam is known for its educational institutions, which attract students from all of the state of Kerala. HMDP Sabha operates an engineering college (SNM IMT), an arts and sciences college (SNM College, Maliankara), an education college (SNM B. Ed College), a teacher training center (SNM TTC, Moothakunnam), an industrial training center (SNM ITI,Moothakunnam), and a higher secondary school (SNM H.S, Moothakunnam), all within three kilometers of the village.

Moothakunnam is thickly populated. It has one hundred percent literacy, and is similar to other villages in India in the graduation rate of women. The people tend to be religious and conservative, and most are either Hindu or Christian.

The village's main business is trade in building materials, mostly marble and granite. At least ninety-five percent of the population is above the poverty line. Few inhabitants are government employees. In the past, most of the men were toddy tapers, but now, most of the village's population is employed by the construction industry. A family's average income is four to five dollars per day.

Many major political parties are active in Moothakunnam, but the leading party are the Communist Marxists.
